Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a man who lives in India, has attracted many people with his grandiose claims. He calls himself, “Messenger Of God” or MSG, according to news outlet BBC. Apparently, he has been leading people in India to believe he is a divine being for over twenty years. He claims he wants only to make the world a better place, and offers blessings upon those who trust him. Some of his followers believe he has blessed them to the point of being able to cheat death. Still, others believe he is capable of magic and holds supernatural power; evidenced, they say, by his miraculous self-healing following a stroke he suffered.
Last Friday, Ram Rahim was arrested after being charged with two counts of rape. Upon his conviction, which carried a twenty year sentence, thousands of his loyal followers flooded the streets of northern India. Chaos ensued as they burned government buildings and vehicles. They vehemently deny the charges and view his incarceration as a miscarriage of justice, an outright smear campaign orchestrated by authorities jealous of his success in reaching the masses with “the truth.”
As a Christian, notwithstanding the fact that Ram Rahim pridefully states he is “equally loved and welcomed by Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians,” I feel compelled to speak out and stand for the real truth. The Bible tells us, as one of the Ten Commandments, not to have other gods before God, and that there is only one true God. Furthermore, God’s Word warns us that false teachers, indeed, false gods will come.
“You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3
“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me,since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it?And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.” – Isiah 44:6-8
“For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.” – Matthew 24:24
Pray for the people of India, as coverage of the events surrounding this blasphemous guru are sure to be consuming their media. Pray that those who hold beliefs in false gods will turn from their sin and repent. Pray that the Lord will open their eyes and heal their hearts. Here in America, remain vigilant so that the love of false gods does not permiate our culture. Some would say, in many ways, this has already occurred; we just hide it better because Our false gods tend to be possessions, not people.
