On Thursday, November 30th, President Donald Trump along with his wife Melania, kicked off this holiday season with an encouraging declaration. President Trump proclaimed that Jesus is the reason for the season during the yearly Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
“From the earliest days of nation Americans have know Christmas is a time for prayer and worship, for gratitude and good will, for peace and renewal.”
President Trump, who has been under scrutiny for his Twitter rants and questionable political choices, was clear about who this country should be focused on during this holy season.
“The Christmas story began 2,000 years ago with a mother, father, their baby son, and the most extraordinary gift of all-the gift of God’s love for all humanity. Whatever our beliefs, we know that the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of this incredible life forever changed the course of human history. There is hardly an aspect of our life today that his life has not touched-art, music, culture, law and our respect for the sacred dignity of every person everywhere in the world.”
Its refreshing to see our country’s leader acknowledging not only the existence of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son but the importance of focusing on Him during a time in our lives when everything is so focused on everything but Him. The Christmas holiday season has been so wildly commercialized, its hard to see Christ’s influence in the lives of many believers in the month of December.
And, in spite of how much some may disagree with President Trump and the way he conducts himself personally and professionally, Christ can transform the heart of anyone to Him, and seeds could have been planted during the ceremony.
In Matthew 1, Joseph, the husband to be of Mary, discovers that his fiancee is pregnant, even though Joseph and Mary had not had marital relations yet. In verse 20, Joseph is contemplating putting Mary away, or in simple terms, break off the engagement quietly, an angel sent by God, comforts him with these powerful words; “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” NKJV.
In the same way that this angel encountered Joseph during a very stressful but pivotal time in his life, the Holy Spirit can do the same for President Trump. Hopefully, the future is that our leader can rely more upon the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit, like his Vice President, Mike Pence, does so well.
